The Lenten season is a good time to ask whether our intentions, expectations and visions are aligned with the Master Builder. Growing in holiness which is really growing to be more like Christ, more into the image and likeness of God. In recent years, I’ve prayed with journals, focusing my heart with a theme, Scripture, and questions to deepen my prayer time.
We hear in scripture that by the age of twelve, Jesus amazed the faithful Jewish people by reading alongside the educated elders. We do not hear the detail of Jesus in grade school learning his letters and phonics. Do we know about each other’s childhoods and schooldays? Perhaps the selected stories of Jesus’ familiarity with scripture are enough. We need to know the scriptures through study and sharing. I wonder if we get distracted when we seek details about people, including Jesus, that are tangential to the main point.
There are times I feel that I do not deserve forgiveness for things I think or say, especially in traffic. It is usually a hard pill for me to swallow when I confess to Him; I feel embarrassed and ashamed. Growing up, I knew confession was something people did in the presence of a priest. They sat down in a tall, narrow, booth thing , and talked to the priest who was seated behind the wall. This was how people could be forgiven for their sins.

I was growing up and was understanding more about what being a Christian is truly like. I also learned what serving is all about and how it is to help others and everything is for God without expecting anything in return. Each time I would serve since, I got a sense of satisfaction deep within me that let me know that I was not doing it just to do it, but to do it for Him. I would try to serve for activities that my parents didn’t recommend and volunteered to be on a church committee. I have felt great about serving and am glad that I chose to do it.

The pungent smell apparently gets to everyone in the house, and especially Judas, who is publicly irritated by this extravagance. I’m guessing at some point, everyone had to step outside for a breath of fresh air. We are close to Holy Week, in which we commemorate the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus. The tragedy of this is that they reject Jesus in the name of God. Give us the joy and faith of Mary, that joy of a believing woman who rejoices in a saving God, who seeks justice, freedom and brotherhood for everyone and especially for the despised of this world. Through Jesus Christ your son, our Lord, to whom with you and the Holy Spirit we give all honor and glory, forever and ever.
Lent is a season full of expectation and anticipation as Christians around the world fix their eyes on the cross, a symbol of sacrifice and promised relationship with God. It’s an exciting time, and I love the challenge of creating new habits or maybe, more traditionally, ridding ourselves of old ones. Extraordinary events in which we clearly experience God — like births, marriages, times in nature or listening to a special piece of music — don’t happen every day or they wouldn’t be extraordinary. These events encourage us to look for God’s presence everywhere so that we can learn to love God more extraordinarily each day, even in experiences that we think of as ordinary. As we reflect on what the past year has offered us spiritually, emotionally and physically, we are humbled.
The Stations of the Cross are a devotion that allows us to follow in the steps of Jesus from his condemnation by Pilate, through the streets of Jerusalem to Calvary, to the Cross, and the tomb. Reflect while walking the stations in the chapel during Sunday’s Communion in the Garden time for a meaningful Lenten practice. When Is Lent?
But Paul knew that he had a mission, and that mission was to be Christ-like, to love as Jesus loved, to serve as Jesus served, to welcome as Jesus welcomes. Perhaps, today we can reflect on what keeps us so busy that we sidestep the life Jesus is calling us to.
